Thangka (Thang-ga), also known as Tangga and Tangka, is a transliteration of Tibetan, referring to religious scroll paintings that are framed with colored satin and hung for worship. Thangka is a unique form of painting art in Tibetan culture. The subject matter covers many fields such as Tibetan history, politics, culture and social life. Most of the thangkas handed down are works of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion.

The painting of traditional thangkas has strict requirements and extremely complicated procedures. It must be carried out according to the rituals in the scriptures and the requirements of the master, including a complete set of process procedures such as pre-painting ceremony, making canvas, composing and drafting, coloring and dyeing, outlining and shaping, laying gold and silver, opening eyes, sewing and mounting, and opening. It takes a long time to make a thangka, which can be completed in as short as half a year or as long as more than ten years.
